Good things first. I bought this gate to keep violent pit bull puppies out of the play area and out of the kitchen. By puppies I mean puppies that are old but weigh over 150 pounds. So I can tell you that it is durable and will definitely not leave the child out of the reach of supervision. It's steel, not plastic, so that's another plus. After installation does not hang and does not rattle. I chose white for my decor but the finish is high quality so black would probably look good too. My dogs are smart and can figure out the latch fairly quickly, but they won't be able to open the fuse on the bottom. I think the best thing about these gates is that if you open the door more than 90 degrees, it stays open. If you open it less, it will automatically close so you can easily navigate back and forth to it if needed. The only issues I had were instructions and installation (but not enough to know the star). First you need a drill. Wall cups are not wall protectors or rubber compression feet. They serve as a nest of sorts as a backup for compression, which is why the thing is so durable. However, dowels are missing and the quality of the screws leaves a lot to be desired. Round white decals are for the outside of the mugs that attach to the wall before screwing in. Basically, you need to fix the wall or door frame after your toddler or puppy no longer needs them. Follow the 16 inch rule for stairs or it will be awkward to go down.
