They either go straight down or bend back down. After that has been said. We bought this for our grandson's 3rd birthday and honestly it's good for him. I wish we could at least buy some tracks so cars could drive down the ramp and just drive over it. They ride on the ground but some will turn around and go under chairs sofas etc. I know you can buy other kits that can be fitted but I don't think they will give you long stretches of track just up the cars go straight ahead. In general, I recommend for those who are passionate about simple designs, but an older child can easily get bored. I've seen a duct tape type lane and we've also used pool noodles to make lanes, but it all depends on your kid. This is our grandson too, so he doesn't play with him every day and that probably makes a big difference too.
