They make work easier and are perfect for the shower wall.
You need to fit between the wall joists so your placement choices may be limited and if there is something in the wall (e.g. electrical boxes from a room behind the wall) things get more complicated. The contractor liked that he placed the boxes in exactly the right places, which made installing the boxes easier. They stuck out far enough that we couldn't use the butt plate and instead bought bits of chrome to attach the boxes to the edges of the tiles.
