I accidentally snapped off the 3.5mm jack on the headphones so I figured that would fix the problem. The wires were a little difficult to place, but the wires are so small. When I tightened the screws and tested the headphones with the adapter, everything worked, but only on the left side. I can only assume it was a problem with the headphones themselves and not the adapter as the headphones are old and the cable has started to come loose in a couple of places at the top - the wires stayed well clamped in the adapter otherwise it feels don't bother afterwards. They separate easily when fully tightened. One star deducted for being a bit tricky to put together, but still a lot easier than trying to solder flimsy headphone wires to tiny pins of other TRS connector replacement options.
