I'm not sure if a previous review indicates assembly difficulties. The device came fully assembled and ready to use except for the batteries. The battery compartment was difficult to open. It's also not clear whether the timer is controlled by initially pressing the 'manual feed' button or by inserting batteries. I would recommend putting in batteries AND pressing the manual feed button at the time of day you want to feed the fish. So you can be sure to feed on time. The timer was very accurate. I had a few days before the holidays to test out the unit, fill it with goldfish flake food and set it on the counter. The only problem I had was that from time to time the "slot" of the dispenser on the feed drum would get clogged and no feed would come out. During the subsequent pass, he delivered more food than was selected. Conclusion: after 8 days my fish is alive. If I had a bigger tank or a bigger investment I would probably get a more sophisticated device. For my purposes this worked fine. June 2016 - Adding a star and giving extra praise to this device. Since my initial review, this device has worked flawlessly. My previous criticism of the uneven dosing was easily remedied by checking that the flakes were the same size before adding them to the feeder. The same goldfish is still alive after several vacations. Buy with confidence.
