Pay a little more for a better player

I got a Samsung 101 for my first DVD a few months ago player bought. The price seemed reasonable and I liked the remote control. I also liked Samsung's one-year parts and labor warranty. Most turntables come with a 90-day labor warranty and 1-year parts warranty, meaning you're at risk if you don't get an extended service contract from your dealer. Hooking it up and setting it up was quick and easy and the manual is excellent, logically laid out with clear instructions. Picture and sound were fine, but there were sporadic, albeit noticeable, "cuts" in the picture where it broke up into large pixels. This isn't the fault of the discs as they don't always appear in the same place at the same time. The slowness with which the player loads DVDs and responds to the remote control is annoying more than occasional picture problems. The remote control is so slow that I often wasn't sure if the player even received a signal until 5 or 10 seconds had passed after I pressed the button. Although you get used to it over time, this is a real disadvantage. The ergonomics of the remote control itself are very good, with an intuitive layout, but this is offset by the player's slow response. The player does a pretty good job. that it got me hooked on DVD but a month later I put this player in my bedroom and bought a Toshiba (2800) which is vastly superior to Samsung and only costs about [slightly] more. Toshiba also has a great feature that Samsung is missing: the first zoom level on Toshiba delivers a slightly larger, letterbox-sized image for widescreen DVDs, without much cropping on the sides and with no noticeable loss of image sharpness. This is very useful on my 27" TV as it keeps the widescreen aspect ratio but makes the picture bigger. Samsung has a feature called "S-Fit" that claims to do the same thing, but the manual says it doesn't work on all drives. and i never got it to work. Toshiba works with every drive I have, which is a feature I wouldn't sacrifice. - One year parts and labor warranty, good instruction manual. Cons: Intermittent picture issues, slow DVD loading and remote control response, 2-level zoom does not increase picture size for widescreen DVDs. If you don't want to pay for an extended warranty, consider Samsung.
