It works fine. Maybe too good. My only complaint is that the low settings are too strong. I want lower settings. My cat only has to lie on it a bit, otherwise it gets too hot. I think if you put it outside then it can take the cold outside well. I would be a little worried that the heat source might attract something different than most would like. It makes me sad to think that there are lonely cats that need a warm bed and a warm heart. The packaging says there should be some space that this rug doesn't cover, so make sure what you put in doesn't take up all of the space. Since this might work too well, you can damage everything about it. The carpet is very durable. It doesn't look like it will break easily and then start a fire. The cable is thick and appears to be waterproof. I don't know how well this pillow holds up to the weather. I use it indoors because I don't turn on the heating in the winter, so I won't test it outside to see how it handles the sun and weather. It feels like he can last for a while when put under or in something. My cat doesn't play with it other than lying on it. Maybe he can handle some claws and scratches for a few seasons. Again, he would have given all stars at lower settings. I think it would be nice to keep a cat sized animal warm outside. A high setting may be too hot. Even if it were outside, because one side might be too hot and anything not touching the mat would still be cold. At an animal shelter, a mat could warm a small kennel.
