Review on 🚴 Messingschlager Adjustable Alloy Bike Stem 31.8 x 85mm, 40-140 Degree, 1.1/8" Ahead, Black by Jessica Lewis

Well built and solid, a few words on mounting to carbon steerer tubes

I bought this to replace the original stem on my Cannondale Quick 1 and get a more upright riding position. As others have noted, this stem is very well made and I particularly liked the fact that the adjustment is on the top of the tube rather than the front. The adjustment actually has teeth that mesh when tightened, making it much better than a friction-based system. From the way it feels when pulled, I can't imagine it ever slipping off. Now a word or two of caution about installation on a carbon steerer tube. It comes with a star shaped compression nut assembly installed in the fork tube to tighten the stem main body to the tube. This is normal for aluminum or steel fork tubes, but should not be used with carbon fork tubes. An expansion/compression nut should be used on carbon fork tubes. Since my fork is carbon, the original stem on my bike had a stretch nut, but I found it too short to use with this adjustable stem. I had to purchase a separate 50mm spacer nut to fit this new stem to my bike. Below is a link to one I found on Revain that costs about $10. I used this without the black top cap and it worked great. I believe that the company that sells this excellent product would benefit from having two styles available. One is sold with a star nut for alloy and steel fork tubes and the other is sold with a swivel nut for carbon fork tubes. It would also be nice if they included a picture of the internals in the list. Otherwise I would highly recommend this stem and would definitely buy it again should I need another.

Pros
  • 40-140 degree adjustable angle
Cons
  • Legacy model
