Impressive Speed: Computers and Accessories

A few years ago I had different brands of CF cards and I realized that only Sandisk cards could do me costly and embarrassing failures were not enough. Since then I've only used Sandisk and it has never let me down. So the question here was the speed value of this card and if it would actually perform in terms of speed. Sandisk doesn't boast about the write speed, although it seems impressive. I don't know if this is the reason for the write speed itself or the UDMA 7 feature, but I've read that this card allows DSLRs to capture many more burst mode frames than slower cards. This. The buffer can be swapped out to the card fast enough to make room for more shots. My DSLR is 5.5 fps and I can probably take a lot more pictures in a row with this card, but I haven't tested it because I don't shoot that often. However, I've found that I can write to this card at 45-60MB/s with a USB 3.0 card reader (speed depends on what computer I'm using and file size). I bought this card for speed reading. My DSLR is USB 2.0, so I can't take advantage of that card's 120MB/s read speed (that's what the card label says). A full 16GB CF card takes a while to boot into the computer (10 minutes with USB 2.0) and sometimes I don't have that time. I paired this card with a Transcent RDF8 USB 3.0 card reader and the download speed to my computer is around 100MB/s. This is not the advertised 120MB/s read speed and is also below Transcend's advertised 130MB/s read speed. However, I've rarely gotten USB read speeds close to rated, so I wasn't expecting that. The 100MB/s speed is more than three times faster than the USB 2.0 card reader in my camera, which has always been my fastest CF card reader. It is safer for the camera and card to use the mini USB port on the camera instead of inserting and removing the card. But now, late at night in a hotel room, after a long day of shooting, when I want to look at my pictures to check them, I only have to wait about 3 minutes to upload them.

Pros
  • Fast transfer speeds of up to 120MB/s (read) for a more efficient workflow
Cons
  • Nothing
