Review on πŸ”Š SMSL Q5 Pro Digital Amplifier: 2-50W USB/Coaxial/Optical, Remote Control, Black by Oliver Phelps

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A truly brilliant budget amp.

I used this amp to replace my old A/V receiver. I saved a ton of space, saved over 20 pounds of weight, and got rid of the trash can in the process. I never looked back It gets 5 stars despite the terrible console (see below). To answer the questions everyone asks: is it noisy? Yes, with a set of quality 8 ohm speakers you'll have more than enough volume to party, watch movies and play music. They won't make your ears bleed, but why would anyone even do that? Does it have bluetooth? no But there's a 3.5mm port if you want to use an adapter. Can I play music from my smartphone on this amplifier? Yes. There is a USB input which should work with any smartphone released after 2013 or so. Every phone that ships with Android OS 5.0 or newer has built-in DAC support (tested successfully). Newer iOS devices should also work (not tested). Windows smartphones, if they still exist, should also work. Can I connect a subwoofer to this amplifier? Yes. There is an RCA output for an active subwoofer. It has a built in 200Hz, 24dB/octave low pass filter. DO NOT attempt to connect a subwoofer to the speaker outputs. What types of inputs are supported? 3.5mm (auxiliary), coaxial, optical and USB. I use my smart TV as a mixer and use the optical input. Works great. Is the remote as bad as they say? Yes. It's absolutely awful. The battery fails at will. Unless of course you really need to remove it. Then you have to call the fire department to bring the pine trees to life. On the remote control is a button with a circle and a down arrow. Don't click this button. If you do this, your remote control will become unusable until a) the battery falls out at the next gust of wind or b) you call the fire brigade to get the above device to remove the battery. I hid the remote until I bought a programmable universal remote. By then I was going back to the Stone Age practice of going to the device to change the source or volume.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
