Based on the reviews I have chosen a size for my youngest child who is going through an awkward phase: many 4T styles are too short and 5T styles are too big and too long for pants. My soon to be 5 year old 4 year old loves Sonic and has outgrown his pair with a different pattern - size 4 is now 1-2 inches above his ankle. The same brand. I don't remember the old ones getting smaller, just my son getting bigger. He wore them for months. The size 8 shirt fits well - the length is to the base of the arms and the waist above. Perfect fit indeed there is room to grow and actually enough for winter. Pants are LONG. So long that he can wear them, his legs completely covered with a fringe, and his hands lowered at the crotch. I washed them and they are still the same. No shrinkage has occurred. He'll grow up in them and love them anyway, and this morning he happily pulled his waist up to his chin... Would it be better at 6? Possibly, but then again, maybe the tip would grow back quickly if I did? Big is better than small, kids that age grow up so fast.
