A few months ago I was in a pretty bad bike accident and ended up with a HUGE bruise on my thigh. Dropped the wheel in a rut and landed right on my thigh. It was my hip against the sidewalk and the sidewalk won. I've been riding for about 15 years and have fallen about 5-6 times including two fairly bad incidents. I decided to seriously look into additional protection. I have tried several different brands/models of quilts including Troy Lee BP7605 and BP5605 pants. BP 7605 is the best of all. It offers the best compromise between protection and comfort. The lining offers serious protection in the event of a fall. The pants are a bit tighter than regular cycling pants or pants with less padding, but I have no doubt that I would have escaped injury if I had been wearing these pants when I suffered the aforementioned burial. Additional points: 1.) I also tried on the Troy Lee BP5605 pants and sent them back. There's extra material for abrasion protection, but ZERO padding for impact protection. 2.) The Alpine Stars Evolution pant gets an honorable mention. They are as comfortable as regular cycling shorts, have SOME protection which would have come in handy on my last fall. In my opinion they are not as durable as the Troy Lee BP7605 shorts but definitely worth a look3.) I have a 32" waist and the MEDIUM BP7605 pants fit well.
