Review on 📸 Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight Flash: Perfect Lighting Solution for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras by Matthew Wheeler

The SB-400 is a very good basic flash, small and powerful enough for its size. The unit has no frills, not even a 'test' button to manually trigger the flash, but it works great with the flash options offered in my new D5100's menu. This is of course a huge improvement over the camera's built-in flash! One thing to note is that the device is positioned high enough on my camera body to almost completely eliminate the horrendous "barrel shadow" created by the camera flash. I use the SB-400 with a Stofen flash head and the results I get are quite pleasing. Note, however, that the reflector must be removed from the flash to adjust the height of the flash head. It doesn't matter, but be aware; It's easy to forget where the height is set because it's obscured by the bouncer. The rocker I use with my SB-600 flash moves with the flash head as its height is adjusted. The SB-400 is wonderfully small and easy to carry when mounted on my camera, serving as my everyday "walker". Now I use my SB-600 for more critical shots. Note, however, that while the body that comes with the SB-400 is very well made, its design leaves a lot to be desired. Rather than being rectangular (easy and cheap to make), it fits snugly around the flash. it leaves absolutely no room to carry an extra drug or two. It doesn't even have room for a flash AND a bouncer. More importantly, there is no belt loop or even a lanyard loop in the case through which a carabiner can be inserted to attach the device to a belt, strap or D-ring. Unfortunately, the case has little to no use other than to protect the flash when stored on a shelf or somewhere deep in a camera bag. However, Flash is a great product, it's fun, easy to use and delivers great results. . It deserves 5 stars of praise.
