Nice little flash for a Nikon DSLR

Having recently bought the D5100 I needed a better flash than the standard pop up flash that came with the camera as the flash can be quite harsh. After reading about it on Ken Rockwell's website, I decided to look into it. I'm far from a camera enthusiast. I also didn't want to take the SB-600 with me everywhere. This flash is actually quite small (fits in the palm of my hand) with a nice carrying case. Installation is easy. The main feature I liked was the pop-up flash, which bounces up to 90

Simple but effective flash

I'm an amateur photographer and I wanted to get rid of the pop-up flash on my Nikon D5100. As someone who's nowhere near a pro, I really didn't want to invest a lot of money right away. I don't often shoot portraits or in low light, but I wanted something more powerful than the built-in flash. This flash does exactly what I want, no frills. It simply snaps into the hot shoe mount and blocks the pop-up flash. Management is via the camera interface. The flash itself uses AA batteries, which are…

Great compact flash

Update: February 16, 2017: Bought a second SB-400 as a backup and love it. at once. Yes, it's overpriced, but the time I saved editing in Photoshop is priceless. Original Rating: Bought about 8 years ago to have a little flash while on holiday. I was so impressed with this flash that I started using it in my photo shoots, leaving behind some of my larger 600/800 flashes. The quality and exposure was always close to perfect, making my editing work easier. But a few months ago it stopped working.

It's a fantastic flash with few options

If you're looking to add flexibility to your flash photography, this is a great option. It is compatible with almost all Nikon cameras and does a great job with both fill flash and bounce flash. It has no manual controls. You can only "adjust" the intensity of the flash through the camera body. The only control on the back is the power button. If you just want to add a flash to a professional body, a body with a broken built-in flash, or a film camera, this is a great option for you. If you're…

Excellent little basic flash

The SB-400 is a very good basic flash, small and powerful enough for its size. The unit has no frills, not even a 'test' button to manually trigger the flash, but it works great with the flash options offered in my new D5100's menu. This is of course a huge improvement over the camera's built-in flash! One thing to note is that the device is positioned high enough on my camera body to almost completely eliminate the horrendous "barrel shadow" created by the camera flash. I use the SB-400 with a

Simply Better on Flash

If you're an avid, non-professional shooter and just need something with better fill than built in flash and bounce ability, the SB-400 is for you They HUGE value for $120. It works with any Nikon that uses the i-TTL system (all newer DSLRs and some point and shoot models). I have a D5000 and thanks to the bounce flash, the quality of my shots has improved a lot, especially when I'm shooting people indoors. Simply aim your flash at the ceiling or wall and everything will be filled with natural…

Fantastic flash in a very small and versatile body - one for hunting

I actually paid almost double what was originally sold before Nikon decided to shut it down. And it's worth every penny spent. I take photos both privately and professionally. I have more cameras and lenses I want to release including some "high end" flashes. Why exactly this one? Two reasons: workhorses, a retro-style Nikon DSLR called the Df. This camera has the look and feel and all the knobs and levers that the old SLRs had, but incorporates the latest (digital) SLRs. Built like a tank, it…

Nikon Flash SB-400: a small miracle

The Nikon SB-400 AF flash unit will appeal to many. It may be small and compact, but this is where the beauty of this little wonder begins. This is Nikon's entry-level Creative Lighting System (CLS), and while limited by many of the features offered by larger Nikon Speedlights like the SB-700 or flagship SB-910, this unit matches that in size and size from surprisingly good results for a built-in flash. If you look at the product description, this SB-400 flash is listed as "Made for Nikon…

Exactly as promised by the manufacturer, high quality.

I took it for 3990 in the network of a German trade brand, and on the storefront there it cost 1500 more, I went online right in the store, ordered it in the online store of this outlet, paid for it in 30 minutes and picked it up. As a result, a discount of almost 30%! solid flash, moderately heavy, body parts fit perfectly, nothing creaks, no backlash. I took it as a replacement for the built-in flash, expectations are 100% justified.

Pros
  • inexpensive, compact, powered by two batteries, high-quality workmanship, sits like a glove on the 3100 carcass, keeps a series of 5-6 frames calmly, metal mount on the shoe
Cons
  • I repeat: turn the head only up

A good quality product, I rate this purchase perfectly.

The specifications say that the reload time is 3.9 seconds. In practice, on my D7000 it fires a burst of 9 shots in less than 2 seconds. I also made a diffuser for it from white cardboard (triangular in shape, when viewed from the side) and I fix it on rubber bands from money. I turn the flash head up towards the diffuser and I get a very good result, a soft light that is suitable for most situations. I bought a sync cable for it for 900, now the freedom of action has expanded even more.

Pros
  • A very decent flash, quite enough for a non-professional user.
Cons
  • 1. The flash head only rotates in the vertical plane. (If taking a vertical shot, do not aim the flash at the ceiling) 2. Flash control through the camera menu.
