Nvidia Shield 2017 + Harmony Hub with a simple remote control

This little USB device is easy to set up, but there are no instructions. The guides are scattered around the web and all you get are bits and pieces. I finally got it working and it works great! I use a Harmony Hub with a simple remote control. I don't use the iPhone version as a Bluetooth remote control. If I did, I wouldn't need that USB device since the Shield has Bluetooth. As I am not using my iPhone as a remote, the 16GB version of the Shieldd and Harmony remote will not work without this FLIRC as it is not an IR port. I think the 500GB N.shield has a built in IR. But I am not sure. These steps may not work for you; especially if you have a different Harmony remote than me. And I'm running out of memory. I also use Mac OSX. I connected FLIRC to the USB port of my Imac. I downloaded Flirc. After installation, the program automatically searches for firmware updates. There was an update. Flirc has been updated. After the update. I unplugged FLIRC from the Imac's USB port. I connected my Harmony Hub and used myharmony, com. You need to add FLIRC as a device. DO NOT ADD Nvidia Shield as an IR Harmony device on a 16GB computer. It won't do you any good. You have to pretend it's FLIRC N. Shield is mainly for harmonic tuning when using IR. Add a device to the harmony. on activity for FLIRC. (Remember, imagine it's N. Shield in your head) Click Add Action. I clicked on "additional TV playback" - then changed it to see Nvidia on the next screen. On a hub and a simple remote control - it doesn't matter what you call it, except for identification purposes. You can call it whatever you want. Select the settings you want. Just make sure you select FLIRC as one of the options. I clicked on the TV; Recipient; and FLIRC. Make sure you click TV to view the video. The rest depends on how you're set up. (HDMI 1; 2; 3, etc.) On the simple remote control, you need to configure 3 buttons to turn on the device. From the remote's main menu in myharmony, click Buttons and select the desired button for Nvidia. Again, this is for a harmony hub with a simple remote control. Sync the remote control. Reconnect the Harmony Hub as if you would use it normally on your TV. Bring a laptop so you'll be close to the Harmony Hub and your Shield. Connect FLIRC to your laptop's USB port. Open the FLIRC software. You should see the remote control on the screen. Take a basic Harmony remote with you. Once the FLIRC software is open (with FLIRC in the laptop's USB port), click the mouse in the top left corner under 'Controller'. Locate Nvidia Shield and select it. You should now see the Shields remote on the screen. Press Start or Start (I don't remember) and you'll see a green light highlighting SHIELD REMOTE actions. For example, the top of the arrow buttons will be highlighted as Up, etc. When they are highlighted, press the desired location on the HARMONY remote. I have made up; Descent; RT side; on the side of the LT and in the middle, like the Shield remote; For back, I pressed the harmony I use for the back button; and I was pressing the Harmony's "Menu" button when it came to the "Home" button on the shield. (But you can program the buttons however you want. Once that's done, you're done. You can save the settings to your desktop if you like. Unplug the FLIRC from the USB port on your laptop and plug it into the USB port on the Nvidia Shield Use your Harmony Simple Remote.NOTE: I had to use a USB extender cable on N.Shield back to front, but some people report that it works fine without it.Why extenders?: When there is no IR signal "read" The remote doesn't work and the USB port is on the back of the shield. I tested it and everything works fine. I hope this helps. I collected parts from the internet and figured it out.

Pros
  • Certified
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other options
