6/7/8 Doesn't fit my 7.1mm Shimano chain

Link doesn't close easily on my Shimano chain. I eventually got one side in, but it was so tight I had to use a chain breaker to get the pin out. I might as well not have a main link at all if it's so hard to open and close. Also, the plates are much thinner than the rest of the chain and look like they've just been stamped. KMC makes a much better missing link that costs more but seems worth it.
