I AM SO ANGRY that GE used this marketing/sales ploy to justify the price of a good water filter just to STOP ALL THE COMPETITIONS! A SHAME! I have a new GE Profile Series refrigerator. (PFE 28K.) We like the in-door auto-sensing water and ice dispenser with an ounce display. Fill and FIRST set the countdown timer to replacing the water filter. When the timer showed "Change Water Filter" and "Days Remaining", I SUSPECTED that this was due to a quantitative diagnostic built into the water filter. NO! Is the filter good? Yes, it's EXACTLY the same as the GE RPWF filter EXCEPT they put an RFID tag on the back! What advantages does an RFID tag offer? - Does the filter help to measure the percentage of filter pollution? NO NO! - It can measure the pressure drop when the filter becomes clogged and alert the owner to a problem. NO NO! - Does this indicate a possible failure of the filter media and warn the owner? NO NO! - What about leak detection to prevent water damage to the refrigerator? THIS IS NOT! Then WHY is the RFID tag on the back of each filter? FOUR reasons: 1-Start a SIMPLE countdown timer (costs about 50 cents), 2-Turn on the EXPIRED indicator REGARDLESS of the level of TRUE filter contamination. 3-Uses the filter 'serial number' identification to NOT ALLOW THE CUSTOMER to easily remove the RFID tag from the back of the old filter using a filter label with a 'no RFID' tag , and OFFERS CUSTOMER TO SAVE MONEY! 4-THE KEY REASON to get the customer to pay MUCH more for each filter than it costs and buy filters ONLY from GE! NO competition, MONOPOLY! ---- Imagine if car companies did that! You can ONLY buy tires from your local dealership for your car make and model! Is there a way to bypass this SCAM? YES SIR. 1- Locate the plastic part of the "empty" filter bypass that came with the GE Profile Series fridge (found by another reviewer who noticed there was an RFID tag on the back of the bypass). 2- Locate the "BACK SIDE must face in" label and remove it. (see picture) 3-Remove the RFID tag under the label. 4-Open the cover of the water filter housing inside the refrigerator. 5-Place the RFID tag on the "FCC" label on the back inside the filter housing next to the screw, hold it while reusing the label you removed from the "empty" filter bypass. (see image) NOW you can install ANY GE RPWF (NOT "E") compatible water filter and save $20-$30 each! - NOTE: 1-This fix will disable the countdown feature but STAYS ON. . Fill and "Autofill" functions. 2-The front panel will now show "NOT FILTERING" when you fill the reservoir with water or ice (even if you installed a new filter). This added insult to the CUSTOMER can easily be overcome by: A) Removing the two screws (inside the top dispenser hole in the door) holding the display to the door. B) Removing the PCB connectors C) Removing the torx screws that secure the PCB to the display. D) Place a small square piece of black tape over the word "NOT" on the display. (See image) E) Assembly. This 15-minute "scam workaround" will save you $20-$30 on every filter change.
