Crystal clear sound for my podcast - Setup with Fire tablet and USB OTG adapter!

SCROLL DOWN TO "SILENT SETUP" IF YOU WANT TO SEE HOW I BUILT AN AMAZING TABLET SOLUTION! I worked for two months to improve my sound and finally faced the facts - my old mic didn't work. I had a CAD U37 USB condenser mic that sounded great to me when I bought it, but now that I needed auditorium quality audio I could hear every faint static crackle and distortion. should you go for USB microphones on a budget. I bought the red because it was on sale for $89 (it went up to $129 the next day) and because red, black, and white are my podcast colors anyway. When he arrived, holy carp! So big! I didn't know it was going to be a King Kong mic. Thick as my wrist. I bought a custom mount, a large pop screen cover, and mounted it on a tripod with a foam backing disc and pop screen filter on the flexible windshield pole. I love that Yeti has a plugin for live monitoring - I bought OneOdio Studio Pro headphones and for the first time I understood why people want to hear their voice live while recording. I did have some technical difficulties though - I live in an apartment and the only room that's really quiet is my dressing room. But I couldn't get my computers close enough to the closet door and the 10 foot cable I borrowed from my U37. The included Yeti cable is ridiculously short, one of the shortcomings I found. Running a cable under the closet door to my laptop was inconvenient, I couldn't check the recording without going outside. Same goes for my desktop - I bought a 10m USB boost cable all the way to the living room and it resulted in some weird distortion cutting off the ends of all my words. If I put the computer in a closet, the Yeti picked up background noise. Here's what ended up working and gave me the ability to experience crystal clear sound when recording on my Yeti for the first time: SILENT SETUP: I bought a Fire 7 tablet (2017 model) for $49.99. I also ordered a $6.29 UGREEN brand USB OTG adapter cable and plugged it into the end of my 10ft USB mic cable. At first I freaked out when I realized I couldn't install Google Play to get the recording app I needed. There it was free in the trial version - to pay only at Revain. However, I downloaded Easy Voice Recorder (blue microphone icon) from the Revain app chooser and it worked great. I can even see the waveform while recording. (I also tried something else called "HD Recording" but it turned out to be wrong - heavy, heavy noise. So app choice matters!) I connected headphones to the Yeti and the OTG adapter to the Mini -USB port of a Fire tablet plugged in, and voila! I had to fiddle with the gain control on the Yeti, it still left a kind of fuzzy recording sound at first, but somehow I accidentally got it perfect and heard a recording that sounded like a professional gate - rich, deep bass, crisp, clean sound. It was like velvet compared to what I was going through. And and! No active USB hub required! The Fire 7 tablet easily powered the mic and my headphones! The tablet itself was not even connected to the network. There he is! A totally silent pickup combo that powers your Yeti for about $57! Couldn't be happier! UPDATE: I just learned something new: when you turn on Alexa Hands Free, it grabs the mic and you can't record in the app. So you need to swipe down from the top of the screen - tap the Alexa speakerphone icon to turn it off - close the recording app, mute the mic, open the recording app, plug in the mic.

Pros
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
