I have a couple of downriggers and am using these bases, I broke two bases - one because the ball got stuck on the reef and the other as the cable tangled. my kicker. I was lucky not to lose the downrigger on either occasion - when it got stuck on the reef I grabbed the DR and held it until the line snapped. This was with a 180lb stainless steel cable. Unfortunately if the base were stronger the downrigger could break instead so it's better to break this cheap piece instead of the downrigger but in my opinion the downrigger should be attached to the strut with a short piece of rope. As a precaution, the rod holder on the downrigger should not be used to prevent the rod from flying overboard if the DR breaks away.
