Although listed as 49 feet, this measurement includes approximately 9 feet of tail cable that is not backlit. The actual length of the lighted section is about 40 feet. It is good for me. The reason I like the long end of the cord with no bulbs is because my outlet is far away and that length of unlit cord allowed me to sneak the cord that far. The length of the end cord is good and thin. While the flaming cord is weatherproof, the transformer plug and block are not. We routed these lights along the railing of the second floor balcony, but while there is an electrical outlet on that balcony, we plugged it in inside to protect it from the weather. A thin cord allows you to easily close it in the door without fear of bending or damaging it.
