Functional alternative to Wii U Pro; Dead zones destroyed by inaccuracies

There aren't many alternatives to the Wii U Pro controller on the market, most third party options work like the Wii Classic controller (via the Wiimote app) which has a very different range of supported games than the Wii U Pro. It definitely works in terms of compatibility, the Wii U will treat it like any other pro controller. Plus points of course in ergonomics, like the Gamecube and that it costs almost half the price. In general it works. The battery doesn't last that long and the material might feel a little cheap, but honestly it's not bad. I have no problems with the buttons, everything is fine and seems to be responsive. I think my only complaint in terms of feel is that they feel *unique*, which is detrimental to sales. It's not a bad design by any means, but the point is that it doesn't look like either the Wii U Pro controller or the Gamecube controller (I regularly switch between the two). So if you're expecting to be able to use this comfortably as a modern wavebird, it might not seem as comfortable as you might expect. It's not bad, it's just a little different. You will adapt with use. For some, this was a deal breaker, especially serious Smash Bros players trained in Gamecube design. For me it would still be a 4 star device. Killer - dead zones on the stick. When this controller originally shipped, it had SERIOUS dead zone issues that rendered it completely unusable. I bought mine after Hyperkin reported it and some buyers confirmed significant improvements. In fact, now it's very handy to use in most games I guess. However, it definitely doesn't match the dead zones of official controllers and will *affect* any game sensitive to such issues (like Smash Bros). I became suspicious pretty quickly after playing a few games and after extensive testing which confirmed that the differences were quite noticeable, they often produced very different directions/movements compared to the same movements on other controller options. I suspect the Gamecube-style octagon around the joystick might play a role in the issue since all Wii U controllers are designed to move in a full circle. Deadzone issues are nefarious because they are subtle and affect different players. and games differ to varying degrees. Minor deadzone issues can suddenly make something that would normally be very easy to do in a game incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, while many gamers can enjoy some games without noticing too much annoyance, I cannot recommend this controller to anyone due to the risk that it could ruin an otherwise enjoyable game without noticing. The whole design concept seems to be aimed at Gamecube controller fans, who are probably Smash Bros players, and for them the issues should be obvious and just keep them from going up against the official Wii U Pro.

  • video games
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
