Review on Heat Gun Vinyl Heat Shrink Rework Station iHGun-1: πŸ”₯ Precise Air Force & Temperature Control with Adjustable LED Display by Kevin Gunnmann

Good device, good equipment. Upgrade - uses power even when off

I am impressed with the quality of this heat gun. The PID control system offers very precise temperature control, it seems. When you turn on the unit, the digital display quickly counts down the exact set point, then stops immediately (see attached video). Either a very good implementation of the PID algorithm, or the program is faking it. Since I can't know, I assume the PID implementation is very good. The device has some other nice features - automatic cooling (when you turn off the switch, the heater turns off, but the fan and the display keep working until the temperature drops to 100Β°C - then both turn off). The temperature is easy to set and the fan speed is controlled with a simple knob. I've found that the fan speed sometimes changes on its own as I press my finger on the speed controller during use. Same with temperature control. Therefore, you must be careful not to accidentally click on these controls. The max temperature is (I think) 480C, which is a lot lower than big heat guns, but it's fine for shrinking heat shrink tubing. It should also easily melt lead-free solder to remove surface mount components (280Β°C is the lead-free process temperature), but I haven't tried it yet. The gun comes with multiple airflow nozzles and makes SMT removal super easy. So two thumbs up for this heat gun, if it lasts I'm totally happy with it. Bit - When the heat gun is plugged in, it always feels warm even when it's off. Apparently the power supply that drives the digital electronics is constantly drawing some current even when the device is off, suggesting a very cheap power supply that uses a quenching resistor to reduce the voltage rather than a proper switching source. It would be out of character for the feel of quality in this product, but maybe the Chinese are good at what looks like quality on the outside but the inside you can't see is rubbish? Time will tell how long this heat gun lasts, but I definitely don't leave it on when I'm not using it. For this reason I am deducting from 5 to 4 stars.
