INACCURACY Meter - Varies greatly between area

UPDATE: I discovered a serious inaccuracy when I first started using this meter to measure lights at various distances. Different measuring ranges give completely different results. With the device in a fixed position next to the lamp, it showed 1850 x 10 (18500 lux). When I change the area it is 148 x 100 (14800 lux). The difference is more than 25%, which is totally unacceptable! This is a very repeatable behavior. So the meter is complete junk. This is a common mistake with cheap multimeters made from low tolerance parts, and these devices are mostly multimeters with a light sensor on the input. OLD RATING: Good device for the price ($15 paid). Really dated packaging and casing (was this made in the 80's?) but it's a tool that seems to work. Runs in auto range mode, you can press and hold the HOLD button to switch to a fixed range. Not very ergonomic to use as the bulb is attached to the device. So if you point it at a light source, you can't easily read the display. But I think it has a HOLD button for that. For that I give 1 star. Now I understand why all other models have a separate sensor unit and wired readers. When checking with my smartphone (Google Pixel XL) using the lux measure app, I found that my phone is within 10% of this unit. Nonetheless, The phone's ambient light sensor is highly directional and needs to be aimed at a light source, while this particular meter has a diffuse dome, so it combines light from multiple directions. Of course, none of these are calibrated, so I don't really know how accurate that is.

Cons
