I have used them in "non-critical" situations where I wanted to email someone pictures or other files, or when I wanted to quickly copy/transfer something from one computer to another. To be honest, while sending or transferring files from one computer to another using physical media can be "old school", in some cases it's much easier if you don't want to create a virtual drive or an online file sharing service . Sometimes you just want to send a bunch of JPG image files to someone, and it's much easier to put the flash drive in an envelope and mail them. This is especially true if there are more than one or two images and you want to send a JPG, for example in a high-resolution format. In such a case, you wouldn't be able to take more than one or two pictures at a time without exceeding the typical limitations of an email service. It's very easy to create a USB flash drive for email. and they can store, reuse, or discard the stick on the receiving end. The reason for the one star downgrade, as others have noted, is that the copy/transfer speed is slow enough to recognize when you're copying a bunch of files.
