Discovered after the rug was used by the cat after moving in, so it was already dried and well soaked when we found it. Vacuum the area a few times with hot water and then soak in another enzymatic cleaner and allow any residual urine odor to dry. Was looking for an enzymatic cleaner that is effective and doesn't smoke us out of our living space. Nature's Miracle is overly perfumed, and while it smells nice, Petzyme couldn't control that well-absorbed smell (perhaps it could work well with a lighter scent, it did improve the smell, but not completely). I treated an area about 4 square feet (2 feet by 2 feet I think starting point in the middle), poured 1/2 gallon from the watering can on it and just let it soak through the carpet, pillows and onto the floor below. The smell of this product falls somewhere between the heavy scent of Nature's Miracle and the light scent of Petzyme. Is it like fruit jelly or cotton candy? Anyway, it dissipates within a few days while drying out with the room fan running and it never stinks throughout the house or makes me wish I'd never spilled it on the carpet. The smell of urine is gone (and not just because you've lost the ability to smell anything at all through perfume). At this point, it's been about a week and the room is usable, and you're no longer sniffing the air suspiciously because you _think_ you still smell like urine. Feel free to simply dampen the stain and be patient while it air dries, the drying process will neutralize urine proteins and bacteria.
