24 color set not as good as it looks

So what can I tell you about this 24 color set? The pieces are 2.5" long and 3/8" square. They are intended for covering large areas, not for detailing (where pastels work best). At first I thought it was a good choice from light to dark and different colors, but I quickly changed my mind. The two oranges were almost the same color, there was only one blue-purple and only one of the yellows worked well - this is a problem as I was trying to do a sunset. Also, only black was really dark. Even the darkest browns, blues, greens, and purples were slightly darker than the midtones. But you can mix them with black, right? Well, I found that the black overshadowed the color rather than darkening it, although that's probably partly due to my lack of pastel experience. If you only have 24 pastels, you also want them all to work well, right? But one of the yellows and one of the browns were so harsh that it took a lot of pressure to get them to overpower the color and that pressure scratched the pastels I had already painted on. Four other pastels required more pressure than most of the set. Thus, 18 pastels worked as expected, while 6 would more correctly be called hard pastels. If you primarily want to use a lot of green and blue, this set is probably the way to go. Otherwise, you can punish yourself by getting frustrated with the set.
