Review on πŸŽ™οΈ Nicama SGM5 Cardioid Condenser Interview Microphone: Ideal for DSLR Camera Nikon Canon Sony Mirrorless Camera DV Camcorder by Jorge Kehayas

Good quality microphone. Great price

I have a few YouTube channels and blog on both. I have several on-camera mics, like the Movo VXR-10, which has been my main vlogging mic so far. I'm a professional photographer, mostly (pun intended) professional sports, but like I said above, I also do videos. I'm a Canon guy too and Canon audio preamps are notoriously not the best. The VXR-10 does not have a preamp and the sound can be a bit harsh. But the Nicama SGM5 has it, and it's very important. Requires battery power (included). Unlike many pricier on-camera mics, the SGM5 doesn't turn off automatically, and if you forget to turn it off after recording, the battery will likely be dead by the time you return. There are several switches on the microphone body. The first is the power button mentioned above. The second is a -10dB attenuator, which I felt was necessary as the recording sounded clipped without it. There's also a high-pass filter to remove rumble and other low-frequency noise. I didn't find it made much of a difference, but I used it anyway. In general, the sound quality of this microphone is decent, especially considering the price. Watch the attached video. The off-axis deflection isn't the best as I picked up too much background noise. The windsock has worked well enough on a windy day lately and any wind noise that was picked up was easily removed in post. studio boom I recommend!

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
