Review on πŸ”Š Micca RB42 Bookshelf Speaker Pair with 4-Inch Woofer and Silk Tweeter - Dark Walnut Finish by Wendy Taylor

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Absolutely amazing speakers but with possible limitations - see explanation

Let me start by saying they look and sound amazing! As mentioned, the bass is amazing for such a small speaker! They are very pleasant to listen to even without a subwoofer and I'm one of those who love bass. Not subwoofer bass to shake your buttocks from, but very enjoyable and natural sounding bass. They are also very well balanced; The highs and mids are very smooth and the soundstage is excellent. The housing is rock solid and simply great for a speaker in this price range. The magnetic grill is also a nice touch. Compared to their MB-42X brother, they have much better bass and flatter response, and a much better looking speaker. I have nothing bad to say about the sound or the looks of the speaker, both are excellent and unheard of in this price range. Seriously, these are the best sounding little speakers I've heard at any price point. Very full and rich. Now for the possible downsides, and I say downsides because they're not downsides for everyone. To get that kind of bass response out of such a small speaker, you have to bend the laws of physics a bit. They did this through several means; They've designed a great cabinet, a tuned connector that works really well, and used a very long excursion woofer that pumps a lot of air for a 4" driver (if you're a car enthusiast, think Stroker). But here's one that might be a problem in some applications; They used a crossover design that dampens the tweeter so the tweeter plays less loud compared to the woofer. In other words, they lowered the volume of the tweeter so the woofer played louder. This can cause two problems; 1) it hurts efficiency, meaning it takes a lot of power to get loud, and 2) the woofer pumps so much, even at moderate volume, that it can very easily collapse (overshoot) when you step on the gas. This is not new, and many speakers other than Micca use this trick. And that's only a problem if you expect very loud volume from this speaker. If you're using it on desktop, it works well (and it's a great use for it, actually). Zed room, everything should be fine. But if you have a large room or want to play really loud, the woofers will stop their run and hit the floor. This sounds terrible and will soon damage the speaker. Also if you use them with a subwoofer and disable low bass they should be fine and able to play louder. I played them with a subwoofer and they sounded amazing! And they can play louder because low bass tames the woofer's excursion a bit. So if you're using them for close range or in a small to medium sized room these are 5 star speakers, especially considering the price. Just don't expect them to make very loud noises and you will love them. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, I'm one of those people like Zeos who buy speakers when I don't need them. her because I'm having an affair with speakers. I seriously have Wazoo speakers. But I like her so much that I let her and find a place. Maybe my bedroom would be a great place for her, and since my wife is short, she would be happy (happy wife = happy life, right?). Have fun while listening! , and reconnected the 10-inch Polk subwoofer to her. I crossed them at 100Hz and it really helped solve the excessive deflection problem. great job getting the bass out of the 4 inch woofer but the compromise really limits these speakers. Add a subwoofer and take the abnormal stress out of them and they sound amazing! I can get pretty good volumes out of them with a subwoofer. So bottom line, these are great near-field speakers or small rooms in their own right. But for any real volume, you need a subwoofer. The question is, are they worth the premium compared to the MB42-X? For applications without a sub, absolutely yes. But if you're using a sub, maybe not. The RB has a more refined sound, but the MB is much better if you have a subwoofer to play bass. Have fun while listening!--------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------------------- - --- --------------------------------- -------Update from 12/19/19 I notices that a loudspeaker always overloads and breaks down. I changed them and the problem stayed with the same speaker. So I figured something was wrong with them and replaced them with Revain. The replacement kit is much better, I can turn them a bit harder and the woofer doesn't go over the top. Something was definitely wrong with one of the first pairs, the woofer was flapping uncontrollably. There may be a problem with the porting. But these are better. Getting more volume from them and haven't hit bottom yet; I can say that there is some cushioning at work. The sound quality is superb and the bass is phenomenal for such a small speaker. Very good!

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Minor issues
