I measured around the narrowest part of my waist (27 inches) because that's where I wanted to wear the belt. The small size (listed as 97 cm, 24-30 inches) worked great for me. (By the way, the purple belt I received actually measures 38-3/4 inches from the top of the buckle to the bottom of the belt.) extra length after it's buttoned so I don't have any excess (about 7 inches on me) dangling from the buckle. That extra 7 inches also allows me to wear it on my hips if I want to, although that wasn't my intention when I ordered it. The outer fabric is "polyester" and feels like a soft, silky material. Will probably order more colors of this belt.
