I had doubts about remanufactured ink cartridges because the ones I got from the wholesale club weren't good. But with this kit the chip works right out of the box and my Canon Pixma MP495 prints great in black and white. The cartridge is packed in a plastic package, the chip part is well sealed. I'm guessing they also include an instruction that says you should ignore the empty cartridge warning. I think with such an affordable price it will be a great alternative to OEM cartridges.
