Best quality, thoughtful design

I have Waxman Soft Touch self-adhesive felt pads which appear to be the brand traditionally sold in hardware stores. I also received a pack of 300 self-adhesive Smart Surface felt pads, which is a great value alternative. I compared them by choosing a mold that came in both shapes - 3/4 inch diameter oatmeal color. This is a very unforgiving application. Examination of the pads quickly shows that the Waxman felt pads have a layer of foam between the felt and the adhesive that the less expensive Smart Surface pads don't have. From a technical point of view, this foam layer is clearly designed to prevent stress concentrations at the bond between the glue and the furniture leg. Sorry if I talk too much for you, but this is a really great piece of engineering, including that layer of foam. Other differences are that the Smart Surface Pads are thicker and feel a bit softer and smoother. I tested the Waxman and Smart Surface pads in very difficult conditions, even harder than chair legs. I place the pods on both the outside cylindrical surface of the coffee cup and the flat bottom of the coffee cup. In fact, in either case, the Smart Surface pads weren't very difficult to remove, while the Waxman pads were very difficult to remove. That doesn't mean Smart Surface Pads aren't a good product. But that explains why they can sell a 300 pack for a low price - because their production costs are lower because they don't use a foam layer. I will probably use Smart Surface pads for many uses, but since using felt pads on chair legs is so unforgiving I will only use Waxman pads on chair legs. I'll add a few other comments about using felt pads here. .Some people complain about felt pads that they don't stick. Especially when reported very soon after application, it was likely that they were not able to clean the surface well before applying the pads. I use solvents for this cleaning but if you do, be aware that paint thinner is flammable, the rags you use are flammable and even if you dry them thoroughly the smell will linger for a day or so. when the residue evaporates. One reviewer noticed that he used a Forstner bit designed to make a flat-bottomed hole to make a small notch in the furniture's legs to help the cushion stay in place better. It doesn't just depend on the adhesive to keep it from slipping onto the page. This is certainly an effective approach, but I don't expect most people to want to bother with it. The problem I've had with some chair legs is that the flat ends of the chair legs don't sit flat on the floor. Felt pads in this case will be crushed at one end and the glue will most likely come loose. Trimming the chair legs so that the ends of the legs are flat on the floor before attaching the felt pads will definitely improve the performance of the felt pads significantly. But then again, most people probably won't want to do this. In summary, Smart Surface mats are a good product and very economical. But for particularly demanding applications, Waxman Soft Touch mats are the best choice.
