I bought this scale after my son was diagnosed with diabetes so we could better measure his diet and calculate insulin doses. Reviews were good and I liked that it had a cutting board for easy cooking and measuring. At first I really liked this scale. This simplifies portioning considerably. But then I noticed serious discrepancies between the portion sizes on the label and the gram weights for the same amount. I looked up how to check accuracy with coins and found that the scale weighed the food almost twice as much as it should. 2 pfennigs were supposed to equal 5 grams, but my scale read 10 grams, and 1 pfennig equaled 4 grams, not 2.5 as it should have. I've tested it with several different coins just to be safe, and even tried a few nickels, which should also be 5 grams. Again, they were all just under twice the correct weight. I will look for new scales. I need really accurate scales so I can calculate the right amount of insulin for my son. If the food weighs more, it skews the ratio and leads us to believe that its food contains more carbohydrates than it actually does. This can lead to injecting too much insulin, which can lead to a drop in blood sugar and loss of consciousness or worse.
