One of the 6 bulbs had some sort of cementitious residue on the screw thread contact and electrical foot contact. It won't come off. So you can't screw a lightbulb into a socket, but even if you could, it's dangerous. Too much hassle with the return and I don't want to deal with the problem again. Next time I'll take it to the store.
