This cable has a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other end. The tube end is polarized; This will ensure that the hot (live) wire is in the correct hole. Older metal lamps can have the appearance of a neutral wire. If you ground yourself and try to turn on this light you will get an electric shock if you mix up the hot and neutral wires. So the problem is that the end of the plug is not accidentally polarized about half the time. You hot plug it in and the neutral wires are reversed at the jack end. The narrower of the two pins is the hot wire, insert a wire from your voltage tester into the smaller hole at the end of the reptile. Measure the voltage between this and a good ground, the screw on the socket cover normally works. If you don't have voltage check the wider side, if there is voltage here the plug at the other end needs to be plugged into the other side. A polarized outlet is pointless if the hot and neutral wires alternate depending on how the other end is connected. If you buy this, only use it with devices that don't have a polarized plug. The polarized jack and plug are for safety purposes only. Any device that does not require grounding will still work, but it is dangerous.
