Review on ๐ŸŽง Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Explorer Bluetooth Headphones: Cutting-Edge ANC and Customizable Sound in Grey/Brown by Monique Larsen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An audio lover's dream at an unbeatable price ($217 at the time of writing)

My favorite headphones are my dt770 pro. So when I started looking for a pair of ANC headphones, I was thrilled that after a few years on the market, beyerdynamic had an extremely reasonably priced offering. It was between them and the Sony M4s ($399). I didn't like the sound of the Bose headphones at all (although they had best-in-class ANC), and the AirPods max were overpriced and didn't offer a lossless wired connection option, so they weren't discussed either. The sound quality is just incredible. I mainly listen to Electronic (Bass and House), Dance, Hip-Hop and Pop. Sony is close, but beyerdynamic primarily values sound quality, and you can tell. They're a bit brighter and more detailed in the high frequencies than the 770s, with a tighter soundstage, but otherwise share many of the same characteristics with great, natural, clear mids, great instrument separation, and deep, punchy bass. Worst of the four I've tried but still very very good and more than just for me. On my busy, city-facing tenement deck, passing trucks and urban buzz disappear, even on Level 1, which is the main reason I bought it. Level 2 is great when I'm sitting right next to my air conditioner in the office or on a plane, etc., but it degrades the sound quality quite a bit. These headphones offer a very unique feature that the other three don't have - USB DAC mode. I connected to my MacBook using a CC USB cable and got uncompressed 24-bit 48kHz audio and it sounded fantastic. A big improvement over the 3.5mm jack on my computer, which is pretty good and comparable to my external DAC. Build quality is okay, great for the price, but Sony and Apple win here, but you pay for it. Very comfortable and light, the material of the cups and the headband is very pleasant, I can wear them all day. The plastic feels a bit cheap and can creak if you don't wear it perfectly, but nothing to put you off. The swiping gestures on the ear cup are just terrible. I set the sensitivity to a minimum to avoid accidental clicks and control from the phone. I disabled the head position accelerometer as it kept cutting out. For a low price, you lose some features that others have. There's no proximity sensor, which would be a much better solution for auto-pause. Bluetooth 4.2 vs 5.0 means worse range (you can still walk to another room but not the yard like I could with AirPods). They still support the simultaneous connection of two devices, although it is an older Bluetooth technology. No LDAC support but I still use Apple and am happy with AAC and lossless wired connection. The battery life is excellent. Mid-range ANC headphones with premium sound quality. If sound quality is your top priority and you don't mind sacrificing some of the features and build quality in order to save close to two hundred bucks, then these headphones are for you!
