Review on Aluminum Medium Duty Storage Shelving With Dual Post Design And Press Board Shelves - 48 X 18 X 72 Inches By Amazon Basics by Anthony Savage

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Incorrect load rating but still decent light duty shelf

I bought 2 of these shelves and have returned them because the product description is inaccurate. It’s a good shelf design:Overall the shelf design is good, easy to setup, relatively light weight, and sits fairly solid. It is entirely constructed of aluminum verticals & horizontal supports. Comes with rubber covers for each end of the vertical rails so you don’t scratch a floor or scrape an arm when reaching on top of the unit. The shelves are particle/pressboard a little over 1/4” thick. Some have said its "about 1/2” thick but I found that to not be the case.Delivery:One of my shelves arrived in a damaged box missing pieces. I think it was packed sufficiently well enough just the box tore open during transit. Have to leave that issue with UPS.Why i returned the units:I found out thru amazon, they cannot ship replacement/missing pieces. You have to ship the whole thing back to get a replacement. Given the price ($160usd) and missing pieces was what prompted me to send both of them back. After paying about $160.usd for each shelf and seeing the capacity i knew i could find one of the steel variants of this shelf and probably cheaper. I have used this type of shelf design several times over the years and always found them fairly sturdy however ive never used one made of aluminum. Honestly though, i would have probably kept these shelves if they could have shipped me the missing pieces.Return process:ebay was excellent here. Sent UPS next day to pick the units up. Was pretty easy for me other than the fact i had to duct tape one box back together. Two problems with this shelf: Rating description and price.Currently ebay has this listed with an overall weight capacity of 4000 lbs and each shelf holding 400 lbs. This is absolutely inaccurate. Now i most assuredly was not expecting a shelf to hold 4000 lbs but i was expecting a more robust shelving unit for $160+. I suspect the entire shelf is to hold a maximum of 400lbs with 100lbs per shelf. Even that would be a stretch.Where not to use:Would not recommend for a garage, basement or any area where the unit is required to significant weight over an extended period of time.Where to use:Would recommend this in a closet to put towels or blankets on. I think this shelf is suitable for that application, however the price is almost double the cost of a higher capacity steel variant that can be found at the orange and blue box stores.

Pros
  • Dual post design for increased stability
Cons
  • The unit is not aesthetic and looks industrial
