I first came across balance bikes when I was researching on the internet at what age children can start pedaling. I was willing to spend money on a Kettler trike because I wanted something that would last, preferably through a couple of kids, and the Kettler seemed like the best option. Then I came across a safety video showing how easily tricycles tip over and how dangerous they can be. It was a video promoting the use of balance bikes. It got me hooked. First I wanted to buy a wooden bike because I saw it everywhere: Skuut, LikeABike, Prince Lionhart etc. But then I started reading about how they can't take abuse and my son is a rude boy. I knew I needed something more permanent. It all came down to this and the Kinderbike Balance Bike Mini, which looks like a great bike on its own, but the Kinderbike seems to have some quality control issues that I didn't want to deal with. Everything pointed to this bike. Featuring maximum seat height adjustment with a drop kit (an additional $15, but you get seat adjustment from 2 inches lower to 12 inches), a composite frame that's guaranteed to last a lifetime and won't rust or warp, and everything else. I thought this bike was worth $30 more than the kids bike. I wanted a bike with real rubber pneumatic tires, a comfortable seat, and preferably a brake, although it probably won't use the brake right away. I explore everything (sometimes to the death) and this bike is no exception. I found a lot of useful information on a wheel site called Two Wheeling Tots. I bought this for my very active 19 month old as an Easter present (we have 2 months until Easter) knowing he might still be too active. shorter drive to summer. I decided to let him try this bike out before Easter to see if he can ride it and it's still too small to ride comfortably, even with shoes on. He is currently about 34 inches tall and weighs 25 pounds. I think if it grows another inch it's perfect. I put it down nervously. The assembly was very easy. I just watched a video on YouTube and it took less than 10 minutes to put together. Installing the lowering was also a breeze, taking about 5 minutes with the relevant YouTube video. I recommend watching the video as the instructions that came with the bike are not that easy. Not hard to follow but not as easy as watching a video. Blue because we plan to use it on gravel occasionally and it was priced lower than the Street model. I wish they offered all models in all colors. However, the red is nice and neutral enough in case we end up driving it to the girl. Or you could look at it in terms of resale value (most boys won't want pink). This bike isn't cheap and it was a huge waste of money for us. The more I read about the benefits of wheels, the happier I am that I spent the money on them. I will not buy tricycles, scooters, etc. That's it. I bought a Catlike Kitten helmet for my son and it fits him like a glove. Highly recommended. Can't wait to get it outside this summer. he will love it Update 3/22/15 A year plus a little more later and we are FINALLY piqued the interest of our almost 3 year old. We had a lowering kit last year but it was still uncomfortable to drive. I took it out two days ago when we had a warm day and told him that if he rode it to the playground he could play. And he did. He also went home. I saw an improvement immediately. On the way home he used the seat and drove faster. Today I removed the lowering kit because I figured he didn't need it at just under 39 inches tall. He doesn't need it, but the seat is in the lowest position. My son is quite tall for his age so most 3 year olds will need a lowering kit. I hope he is interested enough that we can teach him to ride a bike this summer. .Update 4-9-15Three weeks of daily riding and my son has mastered this bike. It lifts its feet and balances. I am so happy I bought it as it will be pedal bike ready next summer and we will be riding on our first family bike ride this weekend Update 7/14/15 My son switched to a pedal bike 2 weeks ago, a week before his 3rd birthday, it took him about 5 minutes to learn how to pedal (no training wheels) and he rides it every day. This bike has helped him achieve that 3 in a week. The wheels are worth it!
