dissolves spontaneously in less than half a year

A really strange decay started this week and continues to accelerate. Didn't do anything to prove it, it was in normal use and just started this gooey powdery decay. I confirmed my drive wasn't to blame and thankfully removed it before damaging it. I've since tried washing it off with water and drying it completely, but it only blooms on its surface and keeps falling apart. creepy and weird!
