I'll try to break it down so it's easy for people to understand. Most double rocker switches (2 switches one above the other as shown in the picture) are single pole. Basically this means the switch can control 1 element, has 1 hot feed and 1 wire to the element you want to switch. Three-way switches are becoming increasingly common in many modern homes. Lights off when you enter the kitchen, and another switch before you enter the laundry room, for example, and one of the switches turns on the light, there is no "on" position and "off" like when you 1 press 3way, the other 3way will turn it on or off. This is what you need to control 2 to 3 position switches or 1 to 3 way and 1 pole switches. So it's the best of both worlds. So if you need 3 positions and a single pole, this is the switch.
