Review on HORI Pokken Tournament Pro Pad Limited Edition Wii U Controller by Cody Mckechnie

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works great with RetroPie/Raspberry Pi; 10ft cable via USB connection!

I got a HORI Pokken controller based on advice that it was a dodgy option for RetroPie on a Raspberry Pi. I've never played a Pokemon game in my life and I don't own a Nintendo Wii U. However, the HORI controller is compatible with PC, RetroPie, and possibly other devices with a USB port. I tried it and RetroPie recognized it immediately. This controller has many positive aspects. It seems to be more reliable and responsive than many sub-$15 controllers circulating around the web (although some of them work well too). It has Playstation style grips, which may be preferable for some with larger hands. The face button layout is similar to the SNES controller, and the D-pad feels great. There are two very large shoulder buttons that are not to be missed. Best of all, it has a 10-foot cable, which is about 4-5 feet longer than most other wired controllers. That way, you get minimal latency (or connection issues), but enough range to not be sitting on your 50-inch flat-screen. I'd say the feel of the controller takes a bit of getting used to and might not be for everyone. The buttons are so bulky that they force your hands outwards, so you press the buttons at a slight angle compared to a traditional NES/SNES controller, and the launch/select buttons are small and in a different location than you'd expect But those are relatively minor issues, and it's a great all-purpose controller for retro gaming.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Not everything fits
