Anyone who says you can't tell it's fake should never have live plants in their tank. I had both. Living ones are much more difficult to care for, but more beautiful. Fake ones to offer when they get old and/or nasty. With two dogs around the house, the poor fish is now stuck with a tiny bamboo plant and a few artificial plants. It's not bad. They are decent looking, light green in color and float on the water. You can also wrap them around the tube if you need to hide awkward lines like I sometimes do. The bases have the same color and provide space for the subsoil (gravel). If you really need them to stay down, plan ahead and buy aquarium-grade glue and attach heavier weights or aquarium-grade rocks to them to keep them where you want them.
