I bought this because I have a cat who likes to ride on my shoulders and it seemed like a more comfortable option than having to keep her balanced and unsteady with claws to dig balance. I also hope she enjoys backpacking enough that it will be an easy way to get her safely to the vet if a visit is required. I didn't know when I ordered it that it comes with a removable, washable bottom pad and a short leash sewn inside. If your pet wears a collar, the leash easily attaches to the collar, reducing the risk of escape. Both sides unzip to be fully opened, and both sides have a zip pocket at the bottom for you to carry small items safely. (I envision a zipper for kibble and maybe even a small bottle of water and a shallow serving bowl. There will also be room for keys and a purse or space for gloves and hats you might want to ditch if the weather during warmer in your absence.) There is also a zip in the air bladder area to allow you to open the front and there is an alternative opaque cover that can be swapped out for an air bladder. Best of all, cat loves it!
