I was surprised that such a cheap tool could be so good. I bought this as a one time thing to make some butt carving work quicker and easier. After sharpening the blade with a grinder and sharpening it with a whetstone, this thing cut through an American walnut like a hot knife through butter. Despite making a few mistakes and sticking the blade into hard surfaces a few times, the metal hasn't warped or buckled, which is a sign of good carbon steel and proper tempering. I would have no hesitation in recommending this to an amateur or professional woodworker.
