Review on Enhanced MSI Optix G24C4 23.6" Curvature Adjustment Monitor, Full HD 1920X1080, 144Hz Refresh Rate, Adjustable Tilt, Flicker-Free, Curved Display, Blue Light Filtering by John Stone

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good monitor with some quirks, under $200 but no more

The monitor is good and a big upgrade from what I had before. Not bad for a 144Hz monitor under $200, but as expected at this price point, there are some quirks. I would like to know some of them before buying. These quirks can mean nothing to you or become a deal breaker. Pros: 1) 144Hz over DP, 120Hz over HDMI - smooth feel 2) Full RGB range 3) Bright but comfortable 4) Easy setup out of the box 5) DP cable included 6) Decent value Cons /Quicks: 1 ) The monitor firmware IMMEDIATELY starts searching for another signal from another port the moment the current signal is lost. It also takes 5 seconds and there are no manual controls during the quest. So when you use this to test a new build, you often see a blank screen. The faster your BIOS starts up, the more likely it is that the time it takes for this monitor to initialize and recognize your signal is missing your chance to get into your UEFI BIOS and doing some things "blindly" need to do (e.g. knowing which key to press). to get into the BIOS). This is a big problem when trying to debug a new build. 2) When using FreeSync in G-Sync compatible mode, the backlight flickers to the point where it becomes noticeable with frame drops. In fact, leaving the refresh rate at 144Hz than FreeSync is less distracting as I haven't seen any tearing yet, but I always see a change in the backlight. 3) The aspect ratio ("screen size") setting is global. So if you want 4:3 for HDMI1 (example), you need to switch it back to 16:9 for DP.4) There is no shortcut for setting the screen size, but there are plenty of shortcuts for other less used menu options. 5) The firmware cannot be updated by the end user. 6) There is very, very little backlight bleeding, but it's only noticeable in the darkest scenes and at suboptimal viewing angles. It doesn't bother me at all as it's very subtle but worth mentioning.
