Difficult to open: Basic collars

I love the design and the look but the clasp at the length that fits my small dog is too small for me to open. He has a 10 inch neck and I have collars that are the same width but have a wider "pinch area" that works great. Open it up because that capture area is too small, but it's not possible to compress hard enough this way. I tried using wax to make it easier but it didn't help. Since I don't want to use pliers every time I want to open it, I just give it up completely.
