I bought 2 of these to prevent my wife's spare tire cover being stolen from the back of her car. I have found that when locked, if you pull a little you can create about 3-4 inches of play on the spool before it locks fully. I've tested this several times and couldn't get it to stay locked at the retraction point when the stylus is inserted and the combination scrambled. One good pull and you'll unwind about 3 inches or more. For my application 3 inches is not enough to remove a tire so it does the job. Again, this serves as a deterrent, not actual prevention. If you really want to, you can just cut that cable with regular wire cutters, or I think you could probably cut the plastic lock. If you're planning on using this to protect something like a wine rack from your teens, I don't think it's going to work very well. Given enough leeway, they can easily pry open a closet door and grab a few bottles.
