I bought several glitter pens for different purposes. You have lived with us for over 20 years. They are good for toddlers because they are easy to hold and are mesmerized by the falling colors. This is a great "silent toy" useful for distracting little fussy kids. As children get older, they like to use them like magic wands. They are durable and hold up well. I prefer two tone spiral wands over plain ones. The colors do not mix, but overlap. Thanks to the spiral, the contents rotate more evenly and not in lumps. I find it quite soothing to just tilt them back and forth and watch the colors fall. The glitter comes from larger metal objects that come in a variety of shapes - mostly stars, hearts, moons, circles and squares with the occasional musical note, an apple, a flower, or I've even seen a penguin. I had one of those magic tubes with little plastic discs with different pictures printed on them. I didn't like it either because the discs had a habit of sticking together in the tube. We also have a 9 inch kaleidoscope that uses one of those tubes that we all enjoy. Look around for the best deal. I bought mine in multiple packs or when the unit price went down about $6.
