I've been waiting for the heat to try this item and a week later I'm very impressed. First a little backstory: I switched from Nespresso capsules to Hario Pore Overs about 3 years ago and have found the whole transition to be rewarding in terms of taste and experience. It pleasantly broadened my interest in making coffee: bean type, grind size, grind size, bloom, pouring technique, etc. It was also nice to develop a beneficial morning coffee routine, a little morning zen moment. Pouring water, observing drops, levitating lands as the water level changes is very meditative. But simply pouring my hot pour overs into a cup of ice was quite frustrating - completely ruined the wealth, impossible to calibrate everything. Even tried freezing coffee in ice cubes! Enter this simple little device - I've never enjoyed iced coffee so much. It retains the same control over the brewing process as pour-overs, but is a lot less confusing - shifts brewing from morning to day and simplifies the process a bit. 2) frustration of making hard iced coffee and 3) curiosity to learn more about coffee culture to incorporate into your daily schedule - purchasing this item is a no-brainer. Now some personal tips and observations related to other comments: 1) Clean - it takes a bit of effort and dedication. If you completely ignore the filter, it will eventually clog, stop working effectively, and/or become dirty. Based on some research and experience, I would NOT recommend putting a filter in the dishwasher. Rather, every 2-3 days I place both parts of the filter in a large cup, jug, or bowl filled with simmering water and a drop of organic/gentle dish soap (Ms. Meyer's method). No need to boil a full kettle, just fill up a regular teapot and hot tap water. It seems to work fine and I've learned that from other users. Also you will need a place to store/store the item when not in use/waiting for next use - I would recommend laying it out to dry rather than drying and/or storing it with moisture in it. I'm mainly talking about the wine bottle, not the cap. When pouring, do NOT just remove the lid, but the whole piece - this makes cleaning easier. Some people complain that this part is difficult to store in the fridge, but once it's cooked, you don't need this part. I've been researching if this is the standard size for a carafe and if it fits on a flat rubber lid (updates coming soon). 3) Servings/amount. I used about 3 flat Hario scoops and filled them up to the 700ml mark. Makes about 2 large cups of iced coffee or 3 small (stronger) cups depending on how much ice you use. So if you want to make a lot of coffee, you have to do it in batches and then store it in a different container. I believe the Hario has a larger version (perhaps an older model) but even that isn't much larger. in general, this is enough for 1-2 people, depending on the situation. Odd downside here, let's say you're having a slow morning or want more than your usual dose, well you're @#$% unlucky as you have to wait at least 8 hours. Because of this, some people use an extra carafe for storage no matter how much they "need" or how many people they're serving. You can also no longer prepare if there is still something in the brew carafe. So be sure to think of an additional container if you live in a family of several people or are often entertained. and you consent to the possible mixing of different batches of brew. 4) Brew time - 8 hours is recommended, but who really wants to do that every night at 9 or 10pm. I leave mine for about 12-14 hours and haven't noticed any ill effects. Although there is slightly thicker coffee liquid at the bottom of the carafe, I just shake it before pouring. OR, I top up my second glass with this super-potent slime as a strength-enhancing sip before moving on to the straw. Other Miscellaneous Items: Sugar - Revain have a great set of syrup dispensers from Oxo Chefs. They can be used to store plain syrup/liquid sugar (as well as cake sauces and cocktail ingredients). Making a simple syrup is easy: For iced coffee, add 1 part sugar to 2 parts boiling water. If you don't want to deal with dispensers just yet (or don't want to at all), just put your regular sugar in front of cold brew or ice and add hot tap water until sugar is coated, shake until dissolved and you're good to go are ready. . I did until my Oxo set arrived. Gooseneck Kettle - Some have complained of difficulty pouring water down the spout (remember you have to pour water down this smaller opening since the filter holder is installed). but any gooseneck kettle makes it easy. Bonus: once fall arrives, you're halfway to hot cooking! straws. Revain also have a great set of reusable, easy-to-clean metal straws from Hiware. If anyone actually made it to the end of this insanely long review, its length is directly related to how highly I recommend this product. All in all a great addition to any home of any size, especially coffee lovers.
