Review on Tetra Whisper Power Filter 10 Gallons: Silent 3-Stage Aquarium Filtration for Optimum Cleanliness (26316) by Jasmine Davis

Whisper PF10 will not prime itself after power outage

I have to manually prime this filter with a turkey attachment to keep it running after a power outage. The water remaining in the pump reservoir is clearly not enough for self-refueling. I have several Whisper 20's and they prime themselves well and suck up several inches of water. My concern is that the unit will not restart on its own after a power outage, depriving the fish of circulation and the exchange of O2/CO2 with air. It's a fish killer when the power is out and you're not around to manually pour more water into the pump's side tank. Buy the Whisper 20 as it has a flow adjustment if the flow is too high for your tank as it starts very well. Edit: I figured out how to fix this device. There is a very small gap between the pump reservoir and the filter reservoir that allows the water to flow slowly from the top level of the filter reservoir back into the pump reservoir. This means that there is enough spring water available to start the pump automatically after a power failure. The slot was too narrow to allow water to return to the pump reservoir. I widened the slot a bit with a small saw and now the filter restarts normally after a crash. This is a manufacturing defect in the plastic molding process. Maybe someone forgot to clean the slot, but it still needs some expansion.
