I just received them and haven't used them for camping yet. They appear solid and should work as tent pegs. I have two problems: 1) Once the batteries are in, the light turns on with a simple click. That would be nice, except it means you can't be sure the lights won't turn on if they collide in your backpack. Even when packaged with the lights inside, they can be turned on by simply squeezing. This is not good. 2) Due to the position of the lanterns, the stakes can only be driven about 4 inches into the ground. This is only half the way. You can use them as flashlights, but they will not be a reliable substitute for real betting. I'm considering returning them for something more practical. Update (2019): They are short lived. Two years later a bulb failed. Another year later another bulb failed. When I put my finger on the battery and pressed the connector tabs the light came on, but even after cleaning and bending the battery contacts I couldn't get the light off make it run alone. I kept the stakes that are strong enough, but I threw away the lanterns.
